Infographic: Why Your Career Isn’t Like the Yellow Brick Road

There is a belief that is drilled into us from a very early age that if you’re not moving forwards, you’re just standing still; so it’s no surprise that when we enter the world of work that our goals are based around the assumption that the only way is up.

Many believe the only way to the top of the career ladder is to progress into management positions where the focus shifts to managing people, teams and specific business strategies as opposed to focusing on a specific speciality. However the management road isn’t always the right option, and there is no shame in turning down the offer of becoming a people manager and instead focusing on becoming a subject matter expert, a road which will still see you progress and grow throughout your career.

As you’ll see in our interactive graphic, your career path should be a journey of courageous self-discovery, not a defined road travelled by those before you if you don’t feel it is the right route to take.

For a more in-depth examination of this topic, take a look at our article, “Don’t Follow The Yellow Brick Road – Deciding If The Management Path Is Right For You”, in issue 9 of Enhance magazine here.
